Stem Cell/PRP Therapy Q & A

What is platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy?

Touted by countless professional athletes, from tennis superstar Maria Sharapova to NBA sensation Stephen Curry, PRP is a form of regenerative medicine that’s well-researched and now being embraced by weekend warriors and non-athletes alike. Because this treatment uses your own blood to speed recovery, there are almost no side effects or allergic reactions.

Your blood is made up of several different parts including plasma, platelets, and red and white blood cells. PRP uses a concentrated dose of your own platelets to stimulate your body’s immunologic response and natural healing process.

How is a PRP Procedure Done?

PRP involves taking a sample of your own blood which is separated with a centrifuge. The platelets are then concentrated and mixed with part of your plasma. The concentrated solution is injected into the damaged muscle or joint, which promotes healing and regrowth of healthy tissue. Dr. Solomonov uses either ultrasound or fluoroscopy (a real-time X-ray) to provide a visual guide that enables him to precisely target the injection to the injured area.

The injection also triggers your body’s immune system which further floods the damaged tissue with the oxygen and nutrients essential to the healing process.

PRP treatment takes about one hour and is performed right in Dr. Solomonov’s office. PRP therapy is an outpatient, non-surgical procedure that involves little to no downtime for recovery. Most patients return to work and their normal activities soon after treatment. Additionally, many patients also experience the pain relief effects of PRP therapy a few days after the injection.

What is stem cell therapy?

Stem cells regenerate tissue in the body and are used to reduce the effects of arthritis and other musculoskeletal issues. Advances in medical technology have harnessed the regenerative power stem cells to help patients heal and relieve pain and discomfort. Stem cell injections are used to encourage damaged tissue, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and bone to heal.

Same as with PRP injections, Dr. Solomonov uses image guidance, such as fluoroscopy for accuracy and precision, during stem cell injection procedures. The entire procedure takes only about an hour on site at Pain Management and Anesthesiology of NJ.
