Arthritis Q & A

What is arthritis?

Arthritis is a degenerative condition that affects your joints. It happens when the cartilage that cushions the ends of your bones wears away, typically because of the general wear and tear of using your joints, and the bones in your joints rub together without any cushioning to reduce friction. This results in inflammation, swelling, pain, and mobility issues.

Arthritis can affect any joint, although it is commonly found in the knees, hips, hands, feet, and spine. Arthritis typically develops slowly, and your symptoms may begin mildly and become more severe and incapacitating over time. Common symptoms include stiff, sore joints, particularly in the morning or after a period of rest, pain that becomes stronger over the course of a day, mild swelling around the affected joint, and clicking sounds when you use the affected joint.

What causes arthritis?

There’s no specific cause of arthritis although there are genetic links, which means that if someone in your family has the condition, it’s more likely that you’ll also develop arthritis. It’s also believed that repetitive use contributes to the degeneration of the cartilage in your joints. Athletes and people with highly physical careers have a higher risk factor for developing the condition.

Symptoms may be worse for people who are overweight or obese. The extra pounds put additional pressure and strain on joints which can exacerbate the condition and its symptoms. Carrying extra weight may also lead to more severe wear and tear on the joints, including the degeneration of cartilage.

How is arthritis treated?

Unfortunately, there’s no cure for arthritis. It’s a chronic condition that must be managed to control and slow the development of symptoms. Dr. Solomonov provides a variety of treatments and therapies to help you find pain relief and manage your condition to lead a pain-free and active life. Most promising therapy for arthritis today is platelet rich plasma and stem cell therapy.  It should be considered prior to surgery. Dr. Solomonov uses advanced equipment in his office to process patient’s own plasma and stem cells. Injections are precise and performed under the guidance of live X-Ray or ultrasound.
